Tuesday afternoon, the corpse of Romanian-born 27-year-old Geila Ibram was discovered in an apartment block in Limerick city. A 26-year-old male has been charged with stabbing a woman to death in the Republic of Ireland. He has appeared before the Belfast Magistrates’ Court.
Thursday, Habib Shamel was detained in the Malone neighborhood of south Belfast.
The court heard that CCTV footage captured him arranging a “sexual exchange” with the victim on the morning of the murder.
Then, at 13:28 local time, Mr. Shamel was observed arriving at the victim’s address before leaving a minute later.
During this time, the court was informed that Mr. Shamel stabbed Ms. Ibram “numerous times in the neck, face, and abdomen in a frenetic attack.”
It is also reported that he sustained a hand injury during the assault and was treated at a hospital in Limerick.
The court was informed that he abandoned his identification in Limerick and traveled north on a bus with a companion.
‘Dangerous human being’
Mr. Shamel is believed to be an Afghani national who filed for asylum in the Republic of Ireland in October 2020.
An Garda Sochána (the Irish police force) was assisting the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) with the homicide investigation.
A PSNI detective testified in court that Mr. Shamel was a “volatile and dangerous individual who posed a real risk of reoffending.”
The detective added,
“Mr. Shamel had no regard for human life and safety.”
Mr. Shamel was indicted under the Criminal Jurisdiction Act of 1975, which permits the PSNI to prosecute in Northern Ireland if a suspect has fled to another jurisdiction.
In denying parole, the judge stated that the prosecution’s case was “strong” and that Mr. Shamel posed an “extremely high risk.”
On May 2, he will appear in court again via video link.
