Former Labour MP Lady Boothroyd died aged 93 last month. In 1992, she became the first female speaker, breaking a centuries-old custom. She held the role until 2000. Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir attended her burial at Thriplow, Cambridge, on Wednesday.

Sunak led tributes with Prime Minister and opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer. Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab said Lady Boothroyd was a fantastic speaker and conveyed his sympathies to her family.

The only female Speaker of the House of Commons, the former Labour MP who died this month aged 93, was called “remarkable” by Sunak. The funeral’s four pallbearers carried the casket inside St. George’s Church to organ music. Her contribution to Parliament made it taller, the prime minister said. Her funeral was attended by mourners.
