At the Grammy Awards in February, Harry Styles had a nightmare when the stage he was playing on began to turn in the incorrect direction.
When a technical error flipped the stage in reverse, the dancers and the performer had to hastily adjust their routine.
In contrast, Harry Styles “phoned the crew in charge to make sure they were okay,” according to Grammys set designer Julio Himede.
The error was “heartbreaking,” he told the Eurovisioncast podcast of the BBC.
“His performance in rehearsals was so polished. I was sitting there watching how Harry and his dancers handled the situation with such grace.
“It’s rather fantastic to continue a live performance and then realize, ‘I have to go in reverse now’.”
After the Grammys, Himede’s next major undertaking will be the Eurovision Song Contest in 2023.
He stated that incidents like the one faced by Styles demonstrate why repeated rehearsals are essential for live television.
“The most intriguing aspect of working on Eurovision is that 37 musicians are performing on that stage,” he told Eurovisioncast.
“At the Grammys, we may have up to thirteen performances. Everything [at Eurovision] is increasing in size. Everything is quicker.”
He noted that the normal time between performances at an award event is three minutes. In fewer than sixty seconds, the stage must be reset during the song contest.
“It is mesmerizing because most people do not realize what is required unless they are in the arena.
“The disorder is organized disorder.”
This year’s Eurovision stage is centered on the themes of “togetherness, celebration, and community” in recognition of the fact that the United Kingdom is hosting the competition on behalf of the 2016 champions, Ukraine.
The stage “takes inspiration from a wide embrace, offering its arms to Ukraine, the show’s performers, and guests from all over the world,” Himede said during the unveiling of his design last month.
By the end of the month, construction will commence at the M&S arena in Liverpool, resulting in the cancellation or relocation of a number of previously scheduled events.
There will be weeks of preparations to guarantee that none of the contestants experience the same fate as Styles in front of the contest’s 160 million spectators.
Tickets for the nine gigs in Liverpool sold out in 90 minutes last week, and fans have been told that phishing email cyberattacks are targeting hotels they have booked, putting their data in danger.
