Helen Gould Beck- Professional Career

After studying ballet and acting in Kansas City, Helen chose to seek a career in Hollywood. For a short while as she made her way to the west coast. Helen’s theater career began as a chorus girl at Kansas City’s Empress Theater. She also worked in summer stock and traveling theater, when she met Humphrey Bogart, who was then unknown. Goodman Ace, the Kansas City Journal’s drama critic, watched her play in a Kansas City nightclub and published rave reviews about her talent.

She was a theater performer as well as a silent cinema actress. She was named one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars in 1927. Sally Rand was named by Cecil B. DeMille after a Rand McNally atlas.

She became a dancer after sound pictures were introduced, and she is most known for the fan dance. She’d play peek-a-boo with her body by manipulating her front and back fans. Her most renowned performance was during the Century of Progress World’s Fair in 1933, where she was accompanied by an orchestra and directed by Art Frasik. She also invented and refined the bubble dance, which she utilized to combat wind when performing outside.

She performed the fan dance on film in Bolero. Helen was detained four times during the fair for alleged indecent exposure after a fan dance performance while riding a white horse through the streets of Chicago, and again after being body painted by Max Factor Sr. with his new Hollywood makeup. She did the bubble dance in the film Sunset Murder Case.

Emma Lovewell’s Death

Rand died on August 31, 1979, at the age of 75, of congestive heart failure at Foothill Presbyterian Hospital in Glendora, California. According to Rand’s adopted son, Sammy Davis Jr. stepped in and issued a $10,000 cheque to cover Rand’s expenditures. She was significantly in debt at the time of her death.
