Career

From 1216 to 1272, Henry III, commonly known as Henry of Winchester, was King of England, Lord of Ireland, and Duke of Aquitaine. Henry, the son of King John and Isabella of Angoulême ascended to the throne at the age of nine, during the First Barons’ War. The war against the rebel barons was dubbed a religious crusade by Cardinal Guala, and Henry’s army, headed by William Marshal, overcame them at the battles of Lincoln and Sandwich in 1217. The Great Charter of 1225, a later version of the 1215 Magna Carta that restrained royal power and secured the rights of the important barons, was Henry’s promise.

Hubert de Burgh and then Peter des Roches, who re-established royal authority after the war, dominated his early administration. The King attempted to reclaim the French regions that had formerly belonged to his father in 1230, but the invasion was a disaster. In 1232, an insurrection led by William Marshal’s son, Richard Marshal, erupted, with the Church negotiating a peaceful solution.
