Millions of women around the world have been inspired by Zarifa Ghafari, one of the most well-known political figures of her generation, for her fearlessness and commitment to making a difference.
She was appointed as the youngest mayor in Afghanistan in 2018 at the age of 26, having been born in 1992. Ghafari has carried the weight of being a young woman in leadership during the Taliban’s resurgence in Afghanistan. The story of this young Afghan woman will be told in a new Netflix documentary that was produced by Chelsea and Hillary Clinton.
The In Her Hands documentary will make its Netflix debut on November 16, 2022. Tamana Ayazi and Marcel Mettelsiefen’s movie, which also starred Ghafari, got its global premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Despite hailing from a country where women are subject to oppression, Zarifa Ghafari is one of Afghanistan’s few female mayors, along with Azra Jafari and Khadija Zahra Ahmadi. Ghafari, who was appointed at the age of 26, is the youngest woman to hold this position. The Taliban in particular expressed their indignation and widespread opposition to her appointment.

In 2018, after being nominated as Maidan Shahr’s mayor by Ashraf Ghani, the young politician was forced to resign due to protests. Even her parents begged her to leave the position. After the previous governor resigned and a social media campaign went viral, she assumed control of Maidan Shahr.

She also escaped an especially horrific attack where she was set on fire.

In November 2020, the Taliban killed Abdul Wasi Ghafari in front of his residence. Zarifa believes that her election as mayor, which the Taliban had violently opposed since she was chosen, is what killed her father.
