In December 2016, Hetfield appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast for an interview with the famous host, Joe Rogan. During the conversation, the guitarist discussed his sobriety journey. The fear of losing his family, which included his wife and two children, he stated, was the most powerful motivator for him.
Because he had lost his parents when he was young, he was afraid of losing his family again. Hetfield was evicted from his home by his wife, Francesca, and was forced to live on his own, which he despised. “[My wife] did the right thing and kicked my a$$ out of the house, which terrified me,” Metallica’s frontman explained.
Once he was alone, he realized he needed to rebuild his life and sought treatment in after-care facilities. He and his wife also went to marriage counseling, and he stated that their marriage was stronger than ever. The singer expressed gratitude to his wife for putting up with something she didn’t want and for sticking by him through his difficulties.

In the same interview, Hetfield stated that his relationship with his children had improved. He was forthright and honest with them, and they admired him for who he was and what he had been through. His older daughter had even begun to tease him. Previously, the legendary rock star admitted that it was difficult for him to balance his music career and family life.
In a separate interview, Hetfield discussed his mistakes as a father after turning 50, according to Loudwire. He explained that he felt obligated to do more for his fans as an artist, which caused him to neglect his family.
“When I turned 50, there was a fork in the road. So I decide, ‘Perhaps I should go even lower and show my fans how much I care about them.’ “But I forgot about the other division: my family,” the artist explained.
Hetfield admitted that his upbringing did not excuse his errors.
“Just because my family disintegrated when I was a kid doesn’t mean my parents didn’t unconditionally love me.” “I know some parents struggle with loving their children,” Hetfield said.
He went on to say that whether he smothered his children with control or simply let them be, being a parent was exhausting in both cases.
