Since making his professional debut in 2004 in the Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zed, where he placed fourth in the “B” group, Nakamura’s career has advanced significantly. Additionally, he earned a spot in the 2004 FIDE World Chess Championship. He won a $32,000 stipend and the title of 19th Frank Stamford Chess Fellow on June 20, 2005, to advance his chess training and competitiveness.

In 2005, he tied grandmaster Alex Stripunsky for first place with a seven-point total over nine rounds to win the US Chess Championship. In the Tala Steel Group A Victory, he also started working out with former world champion Garry Kasparov in 2011. Their initial training began in New York in January and lasted through the end of December 2011.

He competed in the Reggio Emilia Tournament and placed second; he won the US Championship in May; he also played in the Tal Memorial in Moscow; and he came in third at the Biel Chess Festival. In addition to his many other successes in 2012, he also won his third US Championship.

He guided the American chess team to fifth place at the Chess Olympiad in August of that same year. He achieved the highest Fide Blitz rating in 2013, placed third and won the Zurich Chess Challenge in 2014, and finished second in the Grand Prix and had a 2800 rating in 2015 in addition to winning the fourth US Championship.

In 2016, Nakamura defeated Maxime Vachier-Lagrave on tiebreaks to win the Gibraltar Chess Festival for the second consecutive year. He won the Zurich Chess Challenge that year for the second time running. The Gibraltar Chess Festival victory in 2017 added to his successful year.
