After a rough argument with his father, Marvin Gay Sr., Gaye was shot twice, once in the chest and once in the shoulder, piercing his heart.

In Gaye’s bedroom, a shooting took place at 12:38. The first shot killed him. Gaye was pronounced dead at California Hospital Medical Center at 1:01 pm on the day before his 45th birthday.

After his funeral, Gaye’s corpse was cremated at Forest Lawn Memorial Park-Hollywood Hills, and his ashes were scattered into the Pacific.

The first-degree murder charge against Gay Sr. was dismissed in favor of voluntary manslaughter after a brain tumor was found.

The Wife of Marvin Gaye

Gaye married Berry Gordy’s sister, Anna Gordy, in June 1963. Following the couple’s 1973 breakup, Gordy filed for divorce in November 1975.

The couple requested a divorce in 1977. Gaye married Janis Hunter in October 1977. After finally divorcing in February 1981, the couple had already separated in 1979.

Gaye was also the father of three children: Marvin III, Nona, and Frankie. Marvin III’s biological mother was Denise Gordy, Anna’s niece, who was 16 at the time of his birth.

Nona and Frankie were born to Gaye’s second wife, Janis. Gaye’s parents, five siblings, and three kids were all still alive when he passed away.
