Dembo was born in Mobile, Alabama, on  January 24, 1966. He attended the University of Wyoming, where in 1987 he guided the team to the round of sixteen in the NCAA Tournament. Later that year, Wyoming honored the program’s all-time leader and rebounder by retiring Dembo’s No. 34 jersey.

The Detroit Pistons selected Dembo in the second round of the 1988 NBA Draft, and he went on to win the championship in 1989. Despite this, he only participated in one NBA season, finishing with an average of 1.2 points and 0.7 rebounds in 31 games.
Dembo played in Europe and the CBA after leaving the Pistons until his retirement in 1998.
He also participated for the US national team, where he took home a silver medal at the Indianapolis Pan American Games in 1987.

In the 1988 NBA Draft, the Detroit Pistons picked Fennis Dembo with the 30th overall pick in the second round. On September 1, 1988, the former Wyoming star agreed to a multi-year contract with the Detroit Pistons. The 1988–89 NBA Salary Sheet on Eskimo.com states that Dembo made $100,000 while he was a member of the Pistons.

Regretfully, after leaving Wyoming, his passion for the game did not translate into NBA success. He received an NBA championship ring despite playing seldom and just scoring 36 points in his first campaign. On October 31, 1989, the Pistons cut Dembo, making him a free agent.

Fennis Dembo’s Career After the NBA

Following his tenure with the Pistons, Dembo never returned to the NBA. He was primarily involved in European competitions and the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). Among other groups, he belonged to the SLUC Nancy Basket, Chorale Roanne, Shreveport Crawdads, and Rapid City Thrillers. Prior to ending his NBA career in 1998, he enjoyed a successful post-NBA career.

After retiring from professional basketball, Fennis Dembo pursued a variety of business ventures outside of basketball. The former football player reportedly made a career transition and spent some time working as an Alabama jail guard. He was employed by the San Antonio Water System as a maintenance worker when his second marriage ended in divorce.

In 2016, Dembo began driving buses in and out of San Antonio, Texas. He had spent the preceding five years driving buses for San Antonio’s VIA Transit system, according to a 2021 report from Spectrum Local News. In an interview, Dembo stated, “The most important thing is getting to that destination and getting your people there.”

He also acknowledges that he wasted the chance to have a long NBA career. “For me, it was totally overwhelming.” “I neglected the things that required attention,” Dembo said. Though it’s common for retiring athletes to take advantage of their notoriety, Dembo has been very silent about his post-basketball endeavors. This might help to explain why Dembo, like many retiring athletes, unable to significantly raise his net worth.
