He began his acting career in 1970, following his graduation from college when he was hired as Slick in the PBS soap opera Our Street. He relocated to New York City after four years and appeared in Broadway productions such as We Interrupt This Program, The Mighty Gents, and G.R. Point.

The television miniseries King and Roots: The Next Generations both featured Howard Rollins. In 1981, he appeared in the Dino De Laurentiis/Milos Forman picture Ragtime. Howard made a similar appearance in 1988’s Heat of the Night. He has also struggled with drug and alcohol addictions. Rollins was also apprehended many times for prescription and liquor-related offenses and served one month in prison for reckless driving and driving while intoxicated.

Howard Rollins was also removed from the series near the end of season 6 due to his ongoing personal and legal problems. However, from 1993 to 1994, he made numerous appearances in the show’s seventh period. After being excused from In the Heat of the Night, Rollins regained his equilibrium and began reviving his career and notoriety.
Howard Rollins has also seen a guest appearance on New York Undercover, which is being followed by Drunks. Rollins had discovered a similar persona in a 1996 guest appearance on Remember WENN. Howard’s final role was in the 1996 television film Harambee.

His Demise

On December 8, 1996, Howard Rollins died. He died of AIDS-related complications at New York City’s St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center. On December 13th, Howard’s funeral was held in Baltimore. A wax statue of Rollins was unveiled at Baltimore’s Senator Theatre on October 25, 2006. His sculpture is currently on display at Baltimore’s Great Blacks in Wax Museum.
