Anti-Semitic school leaflet reappears to haunt Bavarian Leader
Herbert Aiwanger, the deputy premier of Bavaria, was accused by a major German newspaper of writing and distributing an anti-Semitic pamphlet while still a student.
Later that day, however, his elder brother said that he was the author. The junior coalition partner in the government, the Free Voters (Freie Wähler) party, is led by Hubert and is exclusive to Bavaria.
In one of the biggest newspapers in the state, he was charged on Saturday with being the author of an antisemitic brochure that was distributed during his high school years in the 1980s. Aiwanger is a devout Catholic.
The Munich-based national newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) broke the story on Saturday, stating that the pamphlet had references to the Holocaust and Nazi concentration camps and made fun of a national history competition.
According to SZ’s report, even the state premier of Bavaria, Markus Söder, described the leaflet as “downright disgusting” and said that Aiwanger would need to address the accusations right now.
Söder was forced to go to Aiwanger for more help in 2018 after the Bavarian CSU was unable to secure a majority on its own, as it had done in the previous election.
He completed the Burkhart-Gymnasium in Mallersdorf-Pfaffenberg and his military service before attending Weihenstephan College to study agricultural sciences. With financial assistance from the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung, he graduated with a degree in Agricultural Engineering.
