American actor Johnny Depp will direct a feature film about Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani for the first time in 25 years. According to Deadline, the 59-year-old actor will also co-produce the film alongside Al Pacino and Barry Navidi.
The film will be based on the 48-hour life of Modigliani, who died in the 1920s owing to poverty. Based on Dennis McIntyre’s 1979 play of the same name, Modigliani depicts the painter’s life in Paris in 1916.
This will be Johnny Depp’s second picture as director. He made his directorial debut with The Brave, starring Marlon Brando, in 1997.
About the basis for Johnny Depp’s film, Amedeo Modigliani
On July 12, 1884, Amedeo Modigliani was born in Livorno, Italy. His sculptures and paintings featured elongated figures, asymmetrical compositions, and the use of simple lines.
Modigliani was born in Italy to Jewish parents in 1906 before relocating to Paris. There, he became immersed in the art scene of Montmartre, where he met painters like as Constantin Brancusi and Pablo Picasso, who impacted the reductive nature of his works.
The artist also admired traditional Italian Renaissance painting, which he studied in Florence and Venice as a student.
Career
At the 1912 Salon d’Automne, he exhibited eight stone heads with simplified and elongated forms influenced by African art.
Amedeo, who was not a professional painter, painted not just his acquaintances and well-known personalities from the Parisian creative scene, but also anonymous servants, models, and locals.
In 1917, he began a series of approximately thirty big female nudists, which are regarded as among his finest works due to their warm, vivid colors and sensual, rounded bodies.
1917 marked the beginning of his intimate connection with Jeanne Hébuterne. The couple resided on the Côte d’Azur with their November 1918-born daughter.
The artist suffered from a variety of diseases during his life, including pleurisy and typhus, which terminated his life in January 1920. Hébuterne plunged out a window two days later, killing herself and their unborn child.
The terrible circumstances of Modigliani’s life clouded critical assessments of his paintings for many years. He is still considered one of the most renowned and unusual artists of his generation.
Johnny Depp’s next project is anticipated to begin filming in Europe in 2023. As of yet, the cast of the film has not been disclosed.
Depp is now filming the historical drama Jeanne du Barry by Mawenn, in which he portrays King Louis XV. The filming began on July 26 and will take place in several locations throughout Paris, including Versailles and other neighborhoods.
Johnny Depp recently won a high-profile defamation claim against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, based on a 2018 opinion post she wrote for the Washington Post.
