Padre Damaso, a fat Franciscan priest who served for many years in Ibarra’s birthplace of San Diego, attended the feast.
He publicly humiliated Ibarra’s late father.
The irate host would have jumped at the impolite friar and almost stabbed Damaso to death if Maria Clara hadn’t stepped in quickly enough.
As a consequence of Damaso persuading Capitan Tiago to deny the couple’s nuptials, Ibarra was excommunicated and his engagement to Maria Clara was annulled.
One day, Ibarra’s enemies launched an unarmed attack on the Guardia Civil station, causing the assailants to believe Ibarra was the one who started the uprising.
After the assault failed, Ibarra was accused and arrested.
Elias, a guy, helped Ibarra escape from prison. Before departing, they snuck inside Capitan Tiago’s house.
