Barbara Pravi, The singer who represented France in the 2021 Eurovision competition. Despite giving a strong performance, Barbara was unable to topple France’s over 40-year reign as Eurovision champion. Instead, the singer secured second place for her nation. Barbara Pravi was born Barbara Pjevic on April 10, 1993, in Paris to a musical family. She changed her name to Barbara Pravi in honor of her grandfather. Her mother is of Polish and Iranian descent, while Pravi’s father is Serbian. Hossein Zenderoudi, an Iranian painter, is Barbara’s maternal grandpa. She expressed her pride in her multiethnic heritage to Wiwibloggs, saying:
From an early age, Pravi desired to be a singer, but her parents demanded that she finish school first. She received the grades necessary to be admitted to law school, but after a few years, she decided to leave. Pravi informed the Americans of Paris:
“After high school, I spent two years studying law. I did it for my folks. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do; while I wasn’t the best student, I wasn’t good enough to study law. I wasn’t writing at the time.
Barbara thinks that Voila would help people recognize her artistic talent
After meeting French musician Jules Jaconelli in 2014, Pravi began her musical career. Pravi signed a recording contract with Capitol Music France a year later. Two years later, Pas grand, Pravi’s debut single, was made available. The song was included in her self-titled EP from 2018.
Barbara got off to a good start with Capitol, but she didn’t appreciate the label’s musical strategy. She described how she felt constrained as a singer to Terrafemina:
“When I signed with Capitol, the person hired me because he intended to make me a small singer with no strong opinions, who didn’t talk much, and about whom we didn’t give a damn. I’m five feet tall, kind of cute, and I look cute, so that’s all. When I realized that, I quickly refused because I text and have stories to share.
Barbara changed course for her second EP, switching from pop music to a more conventional French chanson style. Her initial involvement with the Eurovision Song Contest happened at the same time as the transition.
Barbara co-wrote the song that placed fifth at the 2019 Junior Eurovision Song Contest with French musician It. Additionally, the song Bim bam toi went viral on TikTok.
Reviens pour I’hiver, Pravi’s second EP, was released in February 2020
Later, she worked with It to create J’Imagine, which ended up becoming the winning song at the 2020 Junior Eurovision Song Contest. It encouraged Pravi to enter and win Eurovision France, giving her a spot to represent France at the Rotterdam edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2021.
Voila, a song that Barbara hopes will help people acknowledge her artistic skills, was performed. She claimed that Voila is sort of her breakthrough song to Wiwibloggs:
“I want people to hear what I have to say. The problem is that this is all I have. All I have is my voice. All I have to sing with is me, my soul, my entire body. This is the message of Voila. It reads, “If you are not here to hear me, then I am nothing. Please hear me because I only have this.”
Pravi continues,
“I want to create music for the world.” If she does become an international hit, French chanson will have something to do with it. She has already received comparisons to greats such as Edith Piaf. Regarding the impact of chanson on her music, Pravi stated the following:
90% of the music I listen to is this. I adore both of these references, which are mine. The words are what make Jacques Brel and Edith Piaf unique. Always so sincere, fair, and genuine. The words have a big impact on me; this is my first love.
Barbara’s Activism is motivated by her Experiences with an Abusive Partner
Barbara endured abuse from her partner for almost two years. She admitted to having an abortion at age 17 and continuing to see her lover in an interview with Sophie Davant’s magazine S. Pravi says,
“At 17, I was fully informed. violence during a marriage, a tragic abortion. However, I took a while to realize that I was being abused since I kept going back to this man I thought loved me and treated me brutally.
Barbara encountered several challenges on her route to rehabilitation, primarily because she didn’t have her parents’ backing after quitting law school. But over time, Barbara came to understand her worth and developed coping mechanisms for abusive circumstances. I finally came to terms with the fact that life had saved me, she remarked.
Pravi’s personal experiences motivate her to take part in the campaign to stop violence against women. She gave a TED Talk at the Emlyon Business School in early 2020 when she discussed, among other things, her confidence issues. Cathy remarked:
“I’m allowed to make mistakes. I am also entitled to succeed; I can be a wife, a client, a friend, or a lover. If one day I had a daughter, when she is 15 I would tell her that anything is possible that there is no ambition too great, no dream too modest. She will need to put in a lot of effort, have strong perseverance, be willing to learn from her mistakes, and do all of these things in order to realize the goals she has set for herself.
