An IRS special agent is seeking whistleblower protection in order to disclose information about the alleged mismanagement of an investigation into Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden.
Mark Lytle, the attorney for the IRS whistleblower, informed lawmakers on Wednesday that his client has information regarding a “failure to mitigate clear conflicts of interest in the ultimate disposition” of a criminal investigation involving the younger Biden’s taxes and whether he made a false statement in connection with a gun purchase.
“Despite serious risks of retaliation, my client is offering to provide you with information necessary to exercise your constitutional oversight function and wishes to make the disclosures in a nonpartisan manner to the leadership of the relevant committees on both sides of the political aisle,” Lytle wrote in a letter obtained by The Associated Press and sent to the chairmen and ranking members of several House and Senate committees.
The letter states that the supervisory special agent previously shared the information they wish to share with Congress with the Internal Revenue Service and a Justice Department overseer.
Lytle added that his client is in a position to contradict sworn testimony given to legislators “by a senior political appointee.” This appointee is unidentified.
The special agent also wishes to reveal “examples of preferential treatment and politics improperly infecting decisions and protocols that would normally be followed by career law enforcement professionals in similar circumstances if the subject were not politically connected,” according to the attorney.
The Department of Justice declined to comment. The IRS and Hunter Biden’s legal team did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
A federal grand jury in Delaware has been investigating Hunter Biden’s taxes and foreign business dealings since at least 2018. No charges have been lodged as of yet.
In addition, his participation on the board of a Ukrainian energy company and his efforts to strike deals in China have long prompted Republicans to query whether he profited from his father’s public service.
Joe Biden has stated that he has never discussed international affairs with his son. There are no indications that the president is involved in the federal investigation.
The whistleblower letter, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, arrives as House Republicans have launched their own investigations into virtually every aspect of Hunter Biden’s business dealings, including foreign payments and other financial aspects.
Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Rep. James Comer, R-Kentucky, recently evaluated financial transactions involving members of the Biden family that drew attention.
These financial reports are routine, with larger financial transactions routinely flagged to the government; they do not constitute evidence of misconduct on their own.
But Comer, who has been leading the numerous investigations into Hunter Biden, stated that the letter from the whistleblower demonstrates the significance of a congressional investigation into the president and his family.
“It’s deeply concerning that the Biden Administration may be obstructing justice by blocking efforts to charge Hunter Biden with tax violations,” said Comer in a statement released on Thursday.
