While his mother, Joselyn Coogler, is a community organizer, his father, Ira Coogler, works as a probation officer for juvenile facilities. They both received degrees from California State University, Hayward, as did their parents.
Coogler was born in Oakland and up to the age of eight resided there with his family until they relocated to Richmond.
Coogler, who was born and bred in Oakland, has a passion for comic books and a desire to create epic, magical stories.
Ryan was offered a football scholarship when he was younger and went on to play wide receiver at Saint Mary’s College in California.
