She fell in love with youth ministry and it shaped her path once she joined NET Ministries as a missionary in 1986.

She resumed her work in youth ministry at Christ the Redeemer Parish in Sterling, Virginia, in October 2019, and despite the pandemic’s difficulties, she built a vibrant program.

Even though she had never smoked, Starrs’ life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. Irene and her loved ones were shocked to hear this information.

Fairfax Inova Hospital and her kind oncologist, Dr. Benyounes, provided her with wonderful treatment. At first, everything was hazy and it appeared like time was running out.

She did, however, react well to chemotherapy, and despite difficulties and concerns, she was able to enjoy almost a year of generally excellent health, which was absolutely amazing.

Elizabeth began a research study in September after her treatment response began to wane in August.

Unfortunately, as the experiment went on, her health became worse, and it became obvious that it wasn’t working. Irene was too weak to look for other therapies or take part in another experiment.

Her last three weeks were spent in hospice at home with family, making priceless memories. Irene died away quietly on November 15, 2022, after receiving last rites and with her family at her side.

People recall Starr’s journey and the courage she exhibited while battling cancer. Her tenacity is evident in her resiliency, love for her family, and time spent in hospice.

Through her tireless efforts in youth ministry and education, Irene impacted the lives of many people during her lifetime.

The director’s life was significantly influenced by his education. She went to James Madison High School and majored in both math and religion at the College of William & Mary, building a solid knowledge base.

She continued her academic career at the Franciscan University of Steubenville after her service year, where she earned a Master’s degree in Theology.

At the institution, Starrs made friendships that would last a lifetime and be very important to her. These relationships allowed Irene to meet her devoted husband, Joe.

She shared her knowledge and enthusiasm with young minds as a Bishop O’Connell High School teacher as a result of her career journey.

Later on, in Virginia, at St. Thomas à Becket Parish, she worked hard as a committed Youth Minister.

Starrs was born to Catherine and Edward Kelly. Prior to arriving in Vienna, Virginia, she spent her early years in California, Maryland, where she grew up with her five brothers.

She graduated from James Madison High School and went on to the College of William & Mary to pursue a double degree in math and religion.

Her missionary service with NET Ministries from 1986 to 1987 was when her calling to youth ministry really took off.

Her love for helping others was sparked by cross-country travel, retreat planning, and sharing the Gospel with young people.

The filmmaker spent twenty-one years homeschooling her kids because she was passionate about education and was a devout Catholic. Additionally, she counseled homeschooling mothers, interacted with the homeschooling community, and offered seminars at several universities.

Beyond her profession and ministry, Starrs valued family vacations and pastimes like reading and book discussions. She also had a strong passion for genealogy.
