Hakeem Jeffries was born in the Brooklyn Hospital Centre in New York City to social worker Laneda Jeffries and state substance dependency counselor Marland Jeffries. Hasan constitutes his sole companion. He was born and raised in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and has devoted his entire existence to attending Cornerstone Baptist Church. Jeffries earned his diploma from Midwood High School in 1988.

Hakeem subsequently attended Binghamton University to study political science, graduating with honors with a Bachelor of Arts in 1992. Throughout his time at Binghamton, he became a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.

Jeffries pursued further education at the McCourt School of Public Policy of Georgetown University, where he graduated with a Master of Public Policy in 1994. Furthermore, he attended law school at New York University, where he served as a member of the New York University Law Review. In 1997, he was awarded his Juris Doctorate by Magna Cum laude and delivered the student address at Convocation.
