In September 2010, Larry Hoagland, a father of three and a professional photographer from Rancho San Diego, attempted to assassinate Connie Hoagland, his wife of 25 years, by placing a bomb in her car.

She learned that her husband was leading a “double life” with his former high school sweetheart after enduring injuries and numerous treatments.

Hoagland was ultimately found guilty of all the charges against him and given a life sentence plus an additional 13 years in prison. Both his wife and girlfriend testified during his trial that he had been lying to them and had intended to travel to Pennsylvania, which is why he made two attempts to remove Connie from the way.

The strange case, which received a lot of media attention, will be discussed on the episode of Dateline: Secrets Uncovered called Deadly Intent, which airs on Oxygen on Tuesday, November 15, at 10 p.m. ET. After the incident, a probe revealed some unexpected details about Larry Hoagland and his previous family.

Crimes committed by Larry Hoagland and five crucial details

1) Affair between Larry Hoagland and his ex-girlfriend.

Hoagland apparently reconnected with Lee Ann Rupert, his high school sweetheart, and began an illicit relationship with her. He revealed to his girlfriend that he was about to file for divorce and that he intended to wed her once he moved to Pennsylvania. In addition, he misled his wife and went on dates with his lover while claiming to be on business.

2) Two weeks prior to the catastrophe, he attempted to blow up his wife.

About two weeks before the explosion outside the childcare center, Hoagland made his first attempt to kill Connie. He allegedly planted a bomb that did not go off, and it was later found in the midst of a path his wife frequently took close to the family’s Rolando property.

Connie Hoagland’s Ford F-150 caught fire outside the Rancho San Diego daycare center on September 23, 2010, two weeks after his initial botched attempt, when a pipe bomb linked to her car detonated. Larry’s second attempt almost worked, but Connie barely escaped with life-threatening wounds.

3. The prosecution’s case against Larry was heavily reliant on his online search history.

A few days after the incident, Connie Hoagland was still in the hospital when investigators in her case got a tip that resulted in her arrest. On the computer they shared, Larry Hoagland’s business colleague looked at recent web searches and found strange data. He apparently found more than 20 websites with information on building bombs.

In addition, they found more hints that he had recently bought a bomb component from an electronics shop. Inside Larry’s wallet, authorities also found two digits written on a piece of paper that they believe were used to set off the explosives.

4) Hoagland misrepresented his marriage to Lee Ann Rupert, his lover.

Both Connie and Lee Ann Rupert testified at the trial, giving different versions of events. Rupert claims that Hoagland told her that he and Connie were getting a divorce and that they were no longer cohabitating.

She frequently discussed getting married to Larry Hoagland. She continued by claiming she had no knowledge of Hoagland’s pipe bombing attack, which proved to be accurate.

5) After being detained, Larry Hoagland called his wife and admitted to the affair.

Larry Hoagland was arrested five days after investigators found circumstantial evidence connecting him to the explosion that almost killed his wife on his computer devices.

Hoagland called his family, including his wife who was in the hospital, and broke the unexpected news to them. Connie Hoagland claims that he reportedly admitted to having the relationship.
