Father of the Bride’s writers did not design Franck as a gay character; in fact, the movie withheld the character’s sexual orientation. However, Franck appeared to be gay in Short’s interpretation of the character. Martin was aware that the character will always be known as the gay wedding planner.
According to Short, there is no other way to represent the character in a comedic manner:
“I suppose you could play it backward like John Wayne, but it wouldn’t be authentic. And if there is no reality in it, there is nothing to ground it, so you can’t be hilarious about it.
Martin said that based only on his appearance, people shouldn’t have inferred Franck’s sexual orientation. He claimed that it happened frequently when meeting individuals like Franck that you met their wife and eight children.
Despite having multiple LGBTQ acquaintances, Short acknowledged that he frequently gets someone’s sexual orientation wrong.
“It’s frequently quite difficult to determine who is gay,” he remarked.
“I’ve met some very sincere straight people who are effeminate. Then the opposite happens.
One actor who gets mistakenly classified as gay is Short. Martin Short was married to the late Nancy Dolman and is heterosexual. Katherine, Oliver, and Henry were three adopted children that Short and Dolman raised after getting married in 1980. In August 2010, Nancy succumbed to ovarian cancer.
