In a New York court, he was found guilty on eight charges of racketeering and sex trafficking. He eventually got a prison sentence. For more information on the case, see the article.
Is There a Timeline for R. Kelly’s Arrest?
R. Kelly’s alleged sexual misconduct dates back to at least 1994 when he was 27 years old and had just married 15-year-old singer Aaliyah.
When it was revealed by Vibe magazine that Aaliyah had lied about her age on the wedding certificate, the marriage was nullified.
A former tour manager claimed that Kelly bribed a government employee to get Aaliyah a phony ID so that they could get married.
Tiffany Hawkins sued R. Kelly in 1996 for “personal injuries and emotional distress” she suffered during their three-year relationship. The court action ended up being resolved for $250,000.
R. Kelly was also sued by Tracy Sampson, who was 17 at the time, for luring her “into an indecent sexual relationship” in 2001.
Sampson and a former intern at Epic Records claimed they were used as sex objects and then abandoned by the producer.
In 2001, Patrice Jones filed a lawsuit against R. Kelly, saying he had impregnated her when she was a minor and coerced her into having an abortion.
Kelly was sued by Montina Woods, who claimed he had secretly recorded their sexual encounter.
Both disputes were resolved amicably, with confidential settlements and confidentiality agreements in place.
In June of 2002, he was accused of 21 separate counts of creating sexually explicit recordings for minors.
Six years later, at trial, Kelly was found not guilty because the jury could not establish beyond a reasonable doubt that the girl in the tape was a minor.
From his Florida vacation home, Kelly was arrested and charged with 12 additional charges of manufacturing child sexual assault photographs in 2004.
The allegations against him date back to 2017, when he was said to have held six women captive in a sex “cult.” When young ladies came to him seeking advice on their music careers, he would woo them and then take control of their lives.
Kelly was arrested in Chicago in July 2019 and charged with 10 counts of severe criminal sexual abuse by federal authorities.
Eleven more counts of sexual assault and abuse against a minor aged 13–16 were added afterward.
Kelly was charged in federal court in Illinois, Minnesota, and Brooklyn on three separate occasions.
When Will R. Kelly Get Out Of Jail?
On August 18 in New York, Kelly’s trial got underway. The jury decided in R.’s favor a month later, on September 27.
Kelly has been found guilty on nine charges related to the sexual exploitation of children, racketeering based on criminal conduct, forced labor, and violations of the Mann Act, including the trafficking of girls in interstate commerce to engage in illegal sexual activity.
She claimed the musician had an “indifference to human suffering” and used sex as a weapon, coercing his victims into doing horrific acts and infecting some of them with STDs.
