The Green Mile isn’t exactly based on real events. However, King’s book, which was inspired by actual events, had an impact on it.
As a result, George Stinney’s case in real life is closely portrayed in the film.
Stinney, a 14-year-old boy who insisted he was innocent, was found guilty of murdering two little girls in 1944.
The jury at the time was made up entirely of Americans, and the trial lasted under two hours. Ten minutes after that, despite being underage, he was given a death by electrocution-sentence. He is still the country’s youngest death row inmate from the 20th century.
Unfortunately, Stinney’s innocence was established decades after his passing.
In the film, Duncan, who played Coffey, was likewise found guilty of raping and killing two young girls despite his innocence, just like Stinney.
Coffey never had the chance to establish his innocence because the case was set during the Great Depression when discrimination and harsh legal procedures against African Americans were the norms.
