Yuji Naka, the co-creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, allegedly confessed to insider trading while employed by Square Enix. On November 17, 2022, Naka was taken into custody by the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office and charged with violating the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act of 2006.
His detention was linked to the forthcoming mobile game Dragon Quest Tact, according to media sources. The Public Prosecutors Office accused him of insider trading containing secret knowledge. 10,000 shares of the game’s developer, Aiming, were purportedly bought by Naka before to the game’s general release.
In addition, 2 further former Square Enix employees were sentenced to prison when it was discovered that they had paid 47.2 million yen for 162,000 shares between December 2019 and February 2020. Additionally, on December 7, Yuji was held once again on suspicion of acquiring shares of game developer ATeam before the launch of their game, Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, for a total of 144.7 million yen.
Later, an insider trading charge was brought against him by the Public Prosecutors Office for the Tokyo District. According to NHK (via VGC), the video programmer reportedly admitted guilt and told a judge that there is “no doubt” that he committed the alleged crimes.
Yuji Naka appeared in court, but the outcome is not yet known. The Financial Instruments and Exchange Act of Japan forbids insider trading, therefore his claimed admission of guilt will likely lead to more charges. So, he may still be incarcerated.
An Examination of Yuji Naka’s private life
It is difficult to get information on Yuji Naka’s wife and family in the public domain. Naka is a reclusive individual who seldom discusses his personal life in interviews or front of the public.

The event convinced him to study assemblers and practice writing code throughout his education. Naka decided to stay in his hometown after graduation and forego going to college.
There are no verified government records on Naka’s marital status or the existence of any children. He could decide to live a secret, private life away from the spotlight. But according to certain websites, he is married and the father of two children. His personal life is not well known beyond that.
