His wrinkle-free pleated attire was a hit with fashionistas. Miyake was best known for his ‘brown top’ made of sashiko, a Japanese woven cloth. The design was published in the September 1973 issue of Elle Magazine.

The death of Issey Miyake

While the cause of Miyake’s death is unknown, it has been reported that the fashion designer died of hepatocellular carcinoma, a type of liver cancer. Miyake allegedly died on Friday, August 5, 2022, while being treated in a Tokyo hospital. According to Web MD, advanced stages of hepatocellular carcinoma can be treated with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, and target therapy.

While Miyake’s symptoms are unknown at this time, the primary symptoms of hepatocellular carcinoma include abdominal pain, a heavy sensation in the upper portion of the abdomen, severe bloating, loss of appetite, weight loss, profound exhaustion, yellow complexion, nausea, irregular bowel movements, and high fever.

A liver biopsy is commonly used to diagnose the condition. If detected early, the condition can be managed and kept under control. According to an Issey Miyake Group statement, no burial or memorial ceremony was planned because Miyake did not want one. However, little is known about the private funeral or its attendees.

The following people made up the group:

“Always a trailblazer, Mr. Miyake embraced traditional craftsmanship while anticipating new solutions: cutting-edge technology guided by R&D.”

Netizens express their heartfelt condolences to Issey Miyake

One of Miyake’s most significant contributions to fashion is that he is still a huge moneymaker. In the 1980s, the designer released his ‘Pleats, Please’ line, which gave actors, dancers, and models more freedom of movement. Netizens flocked to Twitter in tribute to the legendary designer, praising Miyake for pioneering revolutionary fashion.

Miyake is said to have drawn inspiration for his designs from civilizations and communities while working with everyday materials such as plastic, jute, horse hair, and thread. He has worked on psychedelic designs with well-known Japanese artist Tadanori Yokoo. In 1992, he designed Lithuania’s official Olympic costume.

Furthermore, the Issey Miyake Group stated in their statement:

“He never wavered from his passion, the process of making things.” He continued to work with his team on new concepts and oversaw all Issey Miyake brands.”

Miyake announced his retirement in 1997, citing the need for more time to conduct research as the reason. However, neither the fashion industry nor his admirers will ever forget his enormous accomplishments, which are still relevant today.
