Jaggi Vasudev was born on September 3, 1957, and is 63 years old. His full name is Jagadish, but he is more commonly known as Sadhguru. He was born in the Indian city of Mysore in the state of Karnataka. Vasudev is the youngest of four children, all of whom speak Telugu. He grew up with two older sisters and one older brother.

On September 23, 1982, Vasudev, then 25, rode up to Chamundi Hill and sat on a rock. While there, he had a spiritual experience. After six weeks of this experience, Vasudev handed over his business to a friend and traveled extensively. It was done in an attempt to comprehend his mystical experience. After nearly a year of meditation and travel, Vasudev decided to teach yoga to share his inner experience.

The following year, in 1983, Jaggi taught his first yoga class to seven students in Mysore. Over time, he also began teaching yoga classes in Karnataka and Hyderabad. For this purpose, he rode his motorcycle, subsisting on the produce of his rented poultry farm. He also donated the money collected from the yoga students to a local charity on the last day of the class.
