James Cameron’s long-held dream may finally come true. The acclaimed filmmaker and current box office sensation recently told the Los Angeles Times that he still intends to make a film based on Charles R. Pellegrino’s 2010 book The Last Train From Hiroshima:
The Survivors Look Back. When the contentious item was first published, Cameron expressed his desire to turn it into a feature. He and Pellegrino had also met the book’s main character, Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a month before his death in 2010.
Yamaguchi, a naval engineer, miraculously survived the World War II atomic bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Unfortunately, the film has been delayed, but The Terminator director has not given up hope. James Cameron, who has a $720 million net worth, recently told the Los Angeles Times that he still plans to make a film about Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Cameron admitted to Jordan Riefe of the Los Angeles Times that a Hiroshima film based on The Last Train From Hiroshima: The Survivors Look Back is still his dream project, despite the fact that the book was published more than a decade ago. He cited the Ukraine-Russia conflict and rising nationalism as examples of why the film would be relevant today. “,” Cameron stated.
“We live in a more dangerous world than we previously imagined… I believe the Hiroshima image would be equally, if not more, relevant. It serves as a reminder of what these weapons can do when used on humans.”
To be sure, a Hiroshima film is consistent with James Cameron’s cinematic approaches and aesthetics. Almost all of Cameron’s films depict the ongoing conflict between nature, humans, and intelligent robots, as well as corporate and wealthy avarice, with strong female characters and romance subplots driving the plot forward.
