James Martin, a celebrity chef on television, has disclosed he was diagnosed with facial cancer years ago. ITV reportedly received complaints about the presenter’s treatment of production staff, prompting him to be asked to modify his workplace behavior.
In a series of tweets, he referred to the close of 2017 as “one of the most tumultuous and challenging times of my life.”
He added that he would like to “apologize to the crew involved in this incident, as I did at the time.”
During the 2018 production of James Martin’s Saturday Morning, the celebrity became enraged when a clogged drain occurred at his residence, where the show was being filmed.
In a joint statement released earlier this week, the 51-year-old and the production company Blue Marlin, which accepted responsibility for the damage, acknowledged that “lessons have been learned.”
Extremely distressed
Martin explained in a new statement posted on Twitter that he was diagnosed with cancer around the time of the drain incident and that the cancer “has returned multiple times” following surgery, necessitating “regular treatments.”
He had also been coping with the demise of his grandfather and a home invasion.
“After all this stress, I was in a very emotional state, and when I discovered my home had been flooded during filming in early January 2018, I was extremely upset,” he wrote.
“I can only say that I am human and experiencing a buildup of pressure in my personal life.”
James Martin added,
“I acknowledge that I overreacted to the damage to my house.”
Reports of his maltreatment of production staff surfaced earlier this week after ITV received a new complaint about his behavior on another recent program.
According to the US publication Deadline, Martin was “accused of berating people” and “reducing them to tears in front of other colleagues” while filming the Spanish Adventure program in May.
Previously, an ITV spokesperson stated that “people and their welfare” was their “highest priority.”
“After receiving a complaint in May from members of the Blue Marlin production team regarding the filming of James Martin’s Spanish Adventure, we contacted Blue Marlin to discuss these concerns and learn how the issues raised were being addressed and what actions were taken.
“As a result, we made a number of recommendations for Blue Marlin to implement as soon as possible, including sharing the best practices of some of our own relevant staff welfare procedures and reiterating our Supplier Code of Conduct.”
