James Roday is a well-known American actor, director, and screenwriter who is best known for his part in the hit television series ‘Psych.’ When he tried to register with the Screen Actors Guild, he discovered that there was already another James Rodriguez registered with them, so he changed his professional name from James David Rodriguez to James Roday. After finishing his study at New York University’s experimental theatre division, he made his cinematic debut and was immediately placed in starring roles in his mid-20s. He had to wait a few more years, though, before he got his first big break.
In ‘Psych,’ he was cast as consulting detective and false psychic Shawn Spencer. The show not only thrust him into the limelight but also piqued his interest in directing and screenwriting. Roday is now working behind the camera, directing and writing screenplays for a number of films and television shows while simultaneously playing in a number of others.

On April 4, 1976, in San Antonio, Texas, James Roday was born James David Rodriguez. Jaime Rodriguez, a retired Air Force Master Sergeant of Mexican ancestry, is his father. Irene Rodriguez, his mother, is of British heritage. He has a half-sister called Lisette Rodriguez from his father’s second marriage.
When James Roday was in fifth grade, he saw Michael Jackson’s Thriller music video. It so motivated him that he informed his father he wanted to be an actress one day. Recognizing his seriousness, his parents put him in piano and vocal classes. James Roday, who was a quarterback in high school, aspired to be a football player as well. He had to abandon his sporting ambitions after realizing that he would never grow particularly tall due to his primarily Mexican ancestry, which would have hampered his career.
He graduated from William Howard Taft High School in San Antonio in 1994. Following that, he enrolled in the Experimental Theatre Wing at ‘New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts,’ where he received his bachelor’s degree in fine arts in 1997. He was the lead vocalist and keyboard player for the band ‘Dogberry’ during his undergraduate years, and they released a single called ’24 Hours.’ He also competed in a number of talent shows, never losing any of them.

James Roday- Professional Career
James Roday began his career in the theater, appearing in plays such as “Three Sisters,” “A Respectable Wedding,” and “Severity’s Mistress,” among others. Despite becoming a screen actor later in life, he maintained a strong connection to theater throughout his life. Most notably, he appeared in the 2016 production of ‘White Rabbit Red Rabbit.’ In 1998, he became a member of the ‘Screen Actors Guild.’ Because James Rodriguez was already registered with them, he adopted James Roday as his professional name after a character in the play ‘Three Sisters.’
Roday made his cinematic debut in 1999 as a supporting actor in the romantic comedy film ‘Coming Soon.’ Later that year, he made his television debut as Vic in the crime drama ‘Ryan Caulfield: Year One.’ In the short film ‘Belief,’ he played Bruce Arm / Agent Johnny for the first time as Bruce Arm / Agent Johnny. More character appearances in television shows such as ‘Get Real’ (2000), ‘First Years’ (2001), and ‘Providence’ followed (2002). He also appeared in films such as ‘Thank Heaven’ (2001) and ‘Showtime’ (2001). (2002).
Roday played Max in the adult comedy film ‘Repli-Kate’ in 2002, his second main role. It was followed by ‘Rolling Kansas,’ in which he played Dick Murphy. In 2003, he played Nick Paine, one of the main characters in the immensely popular television series ‘Miss Match.’
In 2005, he landed another huge part as racing star Billy Prickett in the buddy comedy picture ‘The Dukes of Hazzard.’ His biggest break, however, came a year later when he was cast as Shawn Spencer in the detective comedy-drama television series Psych.’
‘Psych’ ran for eight seasons, earning him a fan favorite among viewers. Concurrently, he continues to feature in films such as ‘Fear Itself’ (2008), ‘Garner’ (2009), ‘Love Bites’ (2011), and ‘Mr. Payback’ (2012). (2013). In addition, he participated in ‘WWE Tough Enough’ in 2011 and ‘WWE Raw Super Show’ in 2012. For ‘Psyche,’ Roday began directing, producing, and occasionally writing scripts. Following that, he wrote and directed a variety of films, including ‘Shoot the Moon’ (2014), ‘Quest for Truth’ (2015), ‘Gravy’ (2015), ‘Rosewood’ (2015 – 2016), ‘Rush Hour’ (2016), and others. In 2017, he returned to the role of Shawn Spencer in ‘Psyche: The Movie,’ serving as writer and executive producer. In 2019, he created, produced, and starred in ‘Psyche, The Movie 2.’
He is currently playing Gary Mendez in ‘A Million Little Things.’ Other films and television shows in which he appeared in the late 2010s were ‘Fortune Rookie’ (2018), ‘The Buddy Games’ (2019), and ‘Berserk’ (2019). (2019). ‘Blood Drive,’ ‘The Resident,’ and ‘Into the Dark’ were among his directing efforts during this time period.
