Since high school, James has played linebacker and punter. As a junior, he only played in seven games, but he had 78 tackles and three sacks and was named All-County. He had 170 tackles, 33 stops, 11 sacks, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, an interception, and two defensive touchdowns as a senior.

Moreover, despite receiving offers from Louisville, Marshall, North Carolina, UCF, South Carolina, Ole Miss, and Wake Forest, he chose Clemson in February 2015. Skalski had 14 tackles as a freshman in 2016, with eight of them coming on special teams.

He was second on the team in tackles as a redshirt junior in 2019, with 105, including 7.5 for loss, 4.5 sacks, four pass breakups, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. He also had six tackles, a sack, and a pass deflection in the College Football Playoff National Championship against LSU in 2020.

As of today, he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts on May 13, 2022, and will be released on August 31, 2022.
