Janey Godley Gets The Billy Connolly Glasgow Award For Comedy

Janey Godley

Janey Godley won the inaugural Billy Connolly Spirit of Glasgow Award at the comedy festival in Glasgow. The judges stated that Godley, whose online cartoons about Nicola Sturgeon went viral, embodied the essence of the city.

On the final day of the Glasgow International Comedy Festival, the prize, named after Scotland’s most famous comic, was announced.

Sir Billy went on-screen to announce the winner, stating that Godley was “a deserving recipient.”

He said:

“She has been my friend for maybe five or six years. We first met while she was performing in New Zealand.

“I took her to my show, nearly killing her on the way there. I have a peculiar method of crossing the street. It took her some time to adjust to it.

“She is a wonderful young lady with an exceptional life story.”

Janey Godley is undergoing cancer therapy after announcing last year that she was free of the disease.

Godley, in accepting the medal, stated:

“I cannot believe I have won. I have received an award from a man I have revered since childhood.”

She added while holding the award,

“This will be my tombstone.”

The award, an etched glass self-portrait of Sir Billy, was presented by festival director Kristina MacDonald and Two Doors Down member and judge Elaine C. Smith.

Scott Agnew, Paul Black, Craig Hill, Kieran Hodgson, and Susie McCabe were the other five nominees.
