Butler chose Alabama over Virginia and Baylor when he accepted an invitation to play for the Crimson Tide. He selected the Crimson Tide because he was perplexed by Baylor’s refusal to recruit him, even though his coach, Tim Byrd, was a friend of Scott Drew’s (Bear’s) coach. Despite enrolling at Alabama, Butler did not participate in the team’s summer workouts and requested an unconditional release so that he may transfer to Baylor University.

He was eligible to play immediately after his transfer to Baylor University, where he averaged 10.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists as a true freshman. Butler scored 30 points and shot a career-high three 3-pointers in a 105-6 win over Central Arkansas on November 5, 2019. Butler scored 22 points on January 11, 2020. As a result, Kansas was defeated for the first time in school history by Baylor. Butler was named to the Consensus first-team All-American team in 2021.
