Jayson Tatum performance suffered game three of the Celtics’ playoff series against the Heat, raising doubts about his capacity to guide the team to victory.
Tatum made an outstanding comeback in game four, scoring 31 points as the Celtics tied the series. With momentum on his and his team’s side, Tatum is hoping for NBA Championship success in 2022.

Brandy Cole and Justin Tatum welcomed Jayson Tatum into the world in early March 1998 in St. Louis, Missouri. To raise Jayson while Justin attended St. Louis University and played basketball, Brandy turned down a volleyball scholarship.

Tatum was six months old when Cole left her mother’s house. She bought a two-bedroom house in St. Louis, but she lacked the funds to furnish it. For several years, Brandy and Jayson shared a bed as she tried to make enough money for essentials. Cole had several responsibilities, including paying bills, raising a son, working a part-time job, and attending the University of Missouri.
Cole said to ESPN that “there were many nights I’d come home and he’d already been sleeping.”It was extremely difficult, but I thought it was necessary for both of us.
Brandy regrettably missed some significant events in Jayson’s life.
“I recall my mother telling me over the phone that Jayson had just started to crawl one day. I just started crying,” she continued.
Cole accompanied Jayson to class if, for some reason, no one could watch him. She went on:
“I recall that one teacher brought it up to me. “I pay tuition like everyone else,” I declared. He isn’t interfering with the lesson. Jayson was OK as long as I was holding him.
Taytum deemed it “very horrible” and dull to follow Cole to class. When the pair got home one day, they saw a foreclosure notice posted on the front door. Cole expressed to Bleacher Report that she felt inadequate; Jayson wanted to support her but was unsure of how. He stated, “I was only 11 years old.
Cole nevertheless found a solution, as she had countless times before: she requested a loan adjustment and kept the house. She uttered:
“I’ve always been so happy that we had a home of our own. You shouldn’t stress about packing up your belongings and moving in with your grandmother when you’re a child. I’m going to accomplish this, was a matter of pride. I refuse to turn into a statistic.
Cole continues to support her son’s desire to play basketball. Jayson glanced at some of Cole’s property law books as she pursued her legal education and decided that the legal profession wasn’t for him. Tatum would say, “I want to play basketball,” to Cole.
Tatum put forth a lot of effort and proudly declared his desire to play basketball. Cole, incensed by his teacher’s advice to choose a “practical profession,” stormed the school to confront the person telling Jayson to change his goal. Cole stated to the Bleacher Report:
“It was not a two-way dialogue, sort of. I responded, “Ma’am, with all due respect, I don’t believe it’s acceptable to tell him that’s something he can’t achieve when I’m at home telling him whatever he can dream is achievable if you ask him a question and he answers.”
Cole couldn’t help but count down the days until Tatum would realize the goal she had so fervently and tenderly cherished as the NBA Draft drew near.
Cole tweeted the following message in jubilation after Jayson became the youngest player in Boston Celtics history to score 5,000 career points: “At 23 years, 32 days old Jayson Tatum just became the youngest player in Celtics history to reach 5,000 career points. That’s my child.
Tatum wrote, “Mom’s proud of me, and that’s all that matters. By threatening to stop watching his games if Tatum performs poorly, Cole keeps him on his toes. If you’re not going to be aggressive, let me know, she’ll say. I’ll turn the TV off,” Jason said to ESPN’s Sage Steele.
Although Cole is pleased with Jayson’s athletic accomplishments, he still wants him to finish his studies. She said to ESPN:
“Until you graduate, Coach K won’t retire your jersey. That means a lot to me. Many Duke students return to complete their degrees. It doesn’t matter how long it takes, I told him. He is aware of my laborious efforts.”
In high school, Tatum’s relationship with his father was tense. Jayson’s early years were spent with Justin Tatum constantly nearby. When Justin left to play in the Netherlands, the two of them spoke frequently, and Cole took Jayson to Europe to visit his father.
When he came back from Holland, Tatum started serving as one of Jayson’s main coaches. Justin claimed that Jayson’s potential became apparent when he started to score frequently against more experienced teams.
Jayson’s connection with his father deteriorated as he grew up since Justin was never impressed by Jayson’s accomplishments. While other fathers praised their kids, Justin seemed unaware of Jayson. Jayson claimed, “I could have 40 (points), and he would never clap.
He would merely remain still. I wouldn’t see him again after the game since he would have left. Inadvertently, Justin’s demeanor encouraged Jayson to put in more effort.
“I would go to the gym, thinking if I do this, If I score 50, then maybe that would be good enough,” Jason told ESPN‘s, Sage Steele.
“Honestly, that drove me.”
Perhaps Justin felt angry because Jayson refused to join him at Christian Brothers College High School, where Justin was appointed coach in 2013. Jayson defied expectations by remaining at Chaminade Prep. “It was tough because obviously, I wanted to play for him,” Jayson said. “And he wanted to coach me.”
Jayson said that Justin ‘understood that it was best for me to stay.’ Tatum told Steele that he and Justin are now close, and he appreciates how his desire to make Justin proud drove him to greater heights. However, Jayson vowed to raise Deuce differently:
“Honestly, I and my dad didn’t do normal dad/kid stuff. I was basketball or… I’m sorry. It was always basketball or going to the barbershop. That’s something I’ve always told myself that I’m gonna help my son (and show) how to do it differently.”
Brandy instilled in Jayson the value of giving back to society Brandy Cole resolved to shape Jayson into a star both on and off the court. Tatum wrote in The Players’ Tribune that Cole involved him in volunteer work:
“Mom had me get involved with volunteer work, helping out at a homeless shelter and mentoring young student-athletes in our city. I would go to their practices and games, talk to them about problems they were facing in school.”
After joining the NBA, Jason challenged the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis to organize a supply drive to help the hurricane-ravaged clubs in Florida and Houston. He promised to host a lunch for the winner, which turned out to be The Riverview Gardens club.
Jayson delivered his promise by traveling to St. Louis during an off day in the preseason. “For these kids to come together and do something positive, that’s great for St. Louis, and for them,” Tatum said. Justin told The St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
“This is one of the gyms that helped raise who he is right now. To see him come back, and give back like he always wanted to. These kids, who weren’t even born yet, are sitting and screaming his name.”
Jayson and Brenda planned to start a nonprofit organization to support single mothers. Tatum created The Jayson Tatum Foundation to help youth achieve their dreams. “Our goal is for your youth to positively affect their peers, neighborhoods, communities, and generation in a multitude of ways,” the foundation’s website reads.
In 2021, Tatum hosted the first Jayson Tatum Foundation Charity Golf Tournament in St. Peters, Missouri, to raise funds for his cause. Jayson has two half-siblings from his dad’s other relationships
