After graduating from Green Mountain Valley Ski Academy, Madison native Nobis joined the U.S. Ski Team. He won the 1988 and 1989 world junior giant and super giant slalom championships. Nobis placed tenth in the 1994 Winter Olympics giant slalom for the US.
In 2019, Iron County, Utah, jailed Nobis for drunk driving. After missing a 2021 videoconference court session, he was arrested. Nobis was notoriously crazy. At least four DUIs happened, one during a high-speed pursuit.

Cedar City’s prison found a former Olympic skier’s corpse early Wednesday. Jeremy Nobis’s Death Cause is unknown. The Critical Incident Task Force found Jeremy Nobis unconscious in his Iron Correctional Facility cell. The 52-year-old was confirmed dead after correctional workers tried to rescue him.
Nobis placed seventh in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics giant slalom for the US. According to the St. George News, Nobis was arrested in 2021 after failing to appear in court by videoconference after spending time in jail for a 2019 Iron County DUI conviction. He was arrested in February.
Jeremy Nobis Career
Jeremy Nobis participated in technical disciplines at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, but he became famous for his high-speed freeriding. Skiing was his junior and senior focus at Vermont’s Green Mountain Valley School.
He won the World Junior Championship at 17 and raced his first World Cup the following year. After joining the U.S. Ski Team at 16, Nobis departed the World Cup in 1996. He temporarily skied the professional circuit, coached, and worked in Western ski stores.
Jeremy Nobis then moved to Freeride and starred in Warren Miller Entertainment, Teton Gravity Research, and Matchstick Productions ski videos. He was nicknamed “The Icon” for his life-threatening descents on steep slopes and helped create new freeskiing gear.
His favorite routes were Mr. Ripple and Cathedral in Greenland, where he crossed the Catcher’s Mitt crevasse, and Harvest on Pyramid Peak in Alaska, a 52-degree slope with a 2,000-foot plunge.
