In Palo Alto, California, he co-founded the musical group “The Grateful Dead” with Bob Weir, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, Phil Lesh, and Bill Kreutzman in 1965.

The band heavily relied on improvisation while drawing on a diverse range of musical influences. It is widely regarded as one of the musical forefathers of jam bands. The Grateful Dead and Anthem of the Sun, the band’s first two albums, were only moderately successful.

However, their third album, “Aoxomoxoa,” released in 1969, helped them establish themselves as a well-known rock band. The band used to perform live on tour. Because of its eclectic and distinct sound, the band rose to prominence in the 1970s.
