Jessica has been a water baby since she was a small child. Her parents described her as always being driven and determined. She excelled in a variety of sports, and in some cases, outperformed others. She did, however, enjoy swimming, particularly in her grandmother’s pool. She joined a swim team when she was ten years old, and after almost two years, she was a Paralympic champion. She won three gold medals in swimming in the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece when she was only 12 years old.

She was selected Swimmer of the Meet at the 2005 U.S. Paralympics Open Swimming Championships, and she established two world records in the same year. She went on to establish two more world records the following year, for the 100m butterfly and the 200m individual medley. In 2006, she was selected the 77th AAU James E. Sullivan Award recipient, which honors the best amateur athlete in the United States. Long was also selected Paralympian of the Year by the United States Olympic Committee in the same year.

Jessica’s biggest victory came at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championships in Durban when she won nine gold medals. Jessica has won almost 60 world championship medals in total, including 23 Paralympic medals, 13 of which are gold.
