Until 1996, when he left Bay Networks to co-found VitalSigns, a software firm, Goetz served as vice president there. In April 1997, Goetz and fellow founders Rajiv Batra and Monty Kersten secured funding from Sequoia Capital and Austin Ventures totaling $5.5 million.

In the same month, NetMedia, a “browser companion” application that enables users to find and fix network speed issues, was published. International Network Services bought the business in October 1998. Goetz joined the venture capital firm Accel after the sale.

The deal, which TechCrunch labeled the “biggest acquisition of a venture-backed firm in history,” made Goetz Silicon Valley’s “greatest rainmaker.”

Roelof Botha took over Goetz’s daily managerial duties as one of the company’s three “stewards” in January 2017, while Alfred Lin was given additional responsibilities for Sequoia’s U.S. venture business.

At the time, Goetz said he would continue to contribute to Sequoia and participate in its boards while concentrating on other endeavors.
