He claimed to have witnessed a family of Native Americans injured or killed in a car accident in the desert while traveling with his family as a boy and that their spirits found sanctuary in his body. Morrison co-founded the Doors in Venice, California, with pianist Ray Manzarek in July 1965. The band spent two years in obscurity before becoming famous in the United States with their number-one hit, “Light My Fire,” from their self-titled debut album. Morrison recorded six studio albums with the Doors, all of which were commercially successful and critically acclaimed. While the band was performing live, Morrison was known for improvising spoken word poetry parts. Morrison, according to Manzarek, “embodied hippy counterculture rebellion.”
