Jim Seals

On Monday, June 6, 2022, Jim Seals, the lead vocalist of the 1970s soft-rock duo Seals and Crofts, passed away. He was 80 years old. His friend and fellow musician John Ford Coley shared the news of his passing on social media. He declared:

“Wow. I don’t know where to start. Today was Jimmy Seals’ last day. Even though I’m devastated, I still have some of the best memories of the three of us. Rest in peace, Jimmy.

Brady Seals, Seals’ cousin, reportedly also broke the terrible news in a statement:

“I recently learned that James “Jimmy” Seals passed away. For his wife Ruby and their kids, my heart breaks. Please remember them in your prayers and thoughts. What a fantastic legacy he has left behind.

According to his wife Ruby, Seal passed away following a battle with a “chronic ongoing disease,” according to The New York Times. Along with his wife, the artist is survived by his three children.

Looking back on Jim Seals’ career Jim Seals was a guitarist, vocalist, and composer best known as one half of the 1970s duet Seals and Crofts.

He was raised alongside his brother Dan, who later went on to become a country music sensation, and was born in 1942 to Cora and Wayland Seals.

At the age of 13, Seals started playing the saxophone and later joined the neighborhood band Crew Cats. He met Dash Crofts in 1958 while supporting guitarist Dan Beard. At the time, Seals was also a part of Eddie Cochran’s band.

After that, the two became members of the Champs and stayed so until 1965. Soon after arriving in Los Angeles, they started playing for the Mushrooms before joining Dawnbreakers.

In 1969, they decided to start Seals and Crofts. While Crofts handled the drums, mandolin, and keyboards, Seals handled the guitar, saxophone, and violin. The group signed a contract with Talent Associated and released two albums in 1969, the second of which debuted at number 200 on the Billboard 200 chart.

The two entered into a new contract with Warner Bros. Records in 1971. Their second album, Summer Breeze, proved to be their breakthrough even though their initial record for the new company failed to chart.

The album garnered a gold disc from the R.I.A.A. in December 1972 after selling over a million copies. Their third album, Diamond Charts, was likewise given a gold certification; nevertheless, their fourth, Unborn Child, sparked a debate over a purportedly anti-abortion song.

By 1976, Seals and Crofts’ popularity had started to decline, and after their 1980 album The Longest Road, Warner Bros. decided to part ways with the duo.

After their split, Seals moved to a Costa Rican coffee estate and reportedly devoted most of his time to the Baha’i faith. He re-recorded several of their finest singles for the album Traces, which they made in 2004 after getting back together with Crofts. Ruby Jean Seals and Seals have three kids together after their 1970 marriage.
