Jimmy Kimmel will host the Oscars for the third time on Sunday, the biggest night in Hollywood. The actor will be hoping for less drama than last year when Will Smith slapped host Chris Rock.
Kimmel presided over the Oscars in 2017 – the year of the envelope gate – and 2018 before the ceremony lasted three years without a host.
In recent years, Oscars ratings have declined, however, last year’s celebration marked the first full ceremony since the pandemic.
Kimmel stated in a November 2013 statement:
“A third invitation to host the Academy Awards is either a fantastic honor or a trap.
“In any case, I am grateful to the Academy for asking me so fast after so many qualified candidates declined.”
Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner, Oscars executive producers, and showrunners stated that they were “very ecstatic to see Jimmy score his hat-trick on this worldwide stage.”
They remarked,
“We know he will be humorous and ready for anything.”
On Sunday, the star-studded event of the year will take place (12 March). As it revealed the news of Kimmel’s comeback, the Academy tweeted “Welcome back!” to the talk show host.
On his final appearance as Oscars host, Kimmel criticized Harvey Weinstein at the first Academy Awards after the sexual harassment scandal in Hollywood broke.
Introducing the 2018 ceremony, Kimmel stated: “Last year, the Academy took action to oust Harvey Weinstein from their ranks.
There were many worthy nominees, but Harvey was the most deserving.
A year ago, Kimmel was accused of stealing Patricia Brunson’s thunder during the September Emmys presentation.
He was presenting the Abbott Elementary creator with the award for outstanding writing in a comedy series, but as part of a farce that began just prior to the presentation, he pretended to be intoxicated while Brunson spoke.
Later, on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, he apologized to Brunson for “taking your moment,” although Brunson took it in good humor.
