How did Joan Jett start her Professional Career?
At the tender age of fifteen, Joan had already made up her mind to launch a musical group. The following year, she and a few female friends created the band The Runaways.
Disco music became a worldwide phenomenon in the 1970s. At first, ‘The Runaways’ weren’t well-liked because most people thought they were just a bunch of nave adolescents talking about sex, drugs, and rebellion.
Furthermore, she has claimed to be a vegetarian for over 30 years and is a member of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).
In 1977, the band issued their second album, titled Queens of Noise. The American release of this record also tanked. In Japan, they have three “gold” awards for their efforts.
Joan and her band received so much love and support from Japanese people that they decided to record an album called “Live in Japan” and devote it in part to their Japanese admirers.
In a twist of fate, the record became the band’s breakthrough in the States. After the disappointing reception to their US recordings prompted Joan to contemplate going it alone, she relocated to England in the late ’70s.
She connected with Paul Cook and Steve Jones of the legendary music band Sex Pistols in England. In a similar vein, she went on to produce songs for the American punk rock band the ‘Germs’ after moving back to the States.
She began recording her first solo album but had difficulty getting signed. Reportedly rejected by no less than twenty-three different companies, she eventually co-founded “Blackheart Records” with producer Kenny Laguna. Consequently, Joan established the first female record label in the annals of American popular music. In 1980, she published an album under her name.
After teaming up with Kenny, Joan Jett’s first record, “Bad Reputation,” was reissued in 1981 under the name Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. For “Joanna Jett & the Blackhearts,” their springtime performance in New York was the ticket into the hearts of the American people.
I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll, the band’s second album, was released in early 1982 and was also a great success. The album’s title tune dominated multiple charts for an extended period.
The band was unable to take a break, so they started recording their follow-up LP, Album, which came out in early 1983. Compared to their prior work, this album underperformed.
After that, she spent a few years trying to break into the performing world, but she was ultimately unsuccessful. Two more albums followed, and neither was a commercial triumph for her.
After that, she collaborated with bands like “Bikini Murder” and “L7.” She also participated in two all-female ensembles that were ripoffs of ‘The Runaways. She produced albums like “Fetish” and “Naked” in the 2000s, and “Sinner,” in 2006, which featured oblique political satire.
In 2013, she published “Unvarnished,” her second studio album. It’s her last recording ever recorded in a studio. Many movies and TV programs have featured Jett’s music over the years.
Music from the movies “Shrek,” “Baby Mama,” and “The Runaways” have all become popular. She’s been in pictures like “By Hook or By Crook” and “Boogie Boy.” She also provided narration for the movie “Godly Boyish.” In contrast, she had a relatively unsuccessful performing career.
