On August 19th, Joanna Gail Vargas, a cherished member of her community and a superb Oregon Ducks softball player, passed away, leaving a void that words cannot fill. Everyone who knew her will never forget her exceptional life journey, distinguished by unwavering courage, good sportsmanship, and boundless love for her family and community.
In July, Joanna was given the difficult-to-treat diagnosis of B-cell acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (B-ALL). Despite the overwhelming challenge ahead, she approached her diagnosis with the same vigor and positivity that had distinguished her on the baseball field.
She was an inspiration to everyone during her treatment since she had the strength to lift weights despite receiving chemotherapy. On August 18, when she had bacterial meningitis and was admitted to the intensive care unit, her life took a sad turn once more. By the morning of August 19, there were no more medical procedures to attempt, despite the heroic efforts of the medical staff.
That evening, Joanna passed away peacefully, leaving her family, friends, coworkers, and the larger community in profound grief. Joanna’s love, strength, and impact on numerous lives, however, continue to carry on her legacy.
Being a devoted mother to two small children, ages 2 and 4, and eagerly anticipating the birth of a third child, Joanna’s character was distinguished by her sincere compassion, giving nature, and selflessness. Any place she entered was miraculously made brighter by her presence.
