A well-known personality in the motorsports industry, Jody Scheckter is a South African company owner and a former professional driver. His incredible Formula One career lasted from 1972 through 1980. One of his greatest achievements was winning the Drivers’ Championship with the Ferrari squad in 1979.
Beyond his achievements, Scheckter is remembered with distinction in the annals of Formula One history. In 2023, he will still be the only driver from Africa to have won a Formula One race and won the World Drivers’ Championship. Jody Scheckter’s early life and racing career were influenced by his family’s upbringing and encouragement. Jody was born in East London, South Africa, on January 29, 1950. His father, who had a Renault dealership, was a major influence on his childhood and love of motorsports.
When Jody was a small child, he worked at his father’s car business as an engineering apprentice. There, he learned useful mechanical skills and became fond of fast driving. Eventually, this predisposition brought him to investigate racing—first on motorbikes and then in saloon cars. His daring driving style, which occasionally landed him in hot water—he was even black-flagged for reckless driving in his first national race—marked his early racing adventures.

Jody Scheckter has had six children, each with their own path and aspirations, and two marriages during her family history. Toby and Tomas are the products of his first marriage to Pamela. Remarkably, Toby and Tomas chose to pursue careers in racing, following in their father’s tire tracks.
In the Indianapolis Racing League, Tomas distinguished himself by winning two races. Jody is the happy father of four additional children—Hugo, Freddie, Ila, and Poppy—from his present marriage to Clare. Although Tomas and Toby continue the family legacy of racing, it is not a common interest in his family.
Ila, the daughter of Jody, has also dabbled in racing, participating in the British GT Championship. It’s important to note, though, that Jody’s other kids don’t seem to be actively involved in the racing world, demonstrating the variety of interests and activities that the Scheckter family has.

With a majority of Dutch, British, and German origin, the White population is the second biggest ethnic group in the nation.
