Joe Johnson started out playing football in college. In 1999, as a freshman at Arkansas, he scored 16.0 points on average. He received an honorable mention All-American designation during his sophomore campaign. He played in 30 games in 2000-2001, scoring 14.2 points, grabbing 6.4 rebounds, and dishing out 2.6 assists per game.

In the 2001 NBA Draft, the Boston Celtics selected him as the tenth overall choice. He made 33 starts throughout the first half of his rookie season, scoring 6.3 points on average. But in February 2002, he was sent to the Phoenix Suns. He played for the Phoenix Suns from 2002 to 2005, where he averaged 39.3 percent.

Joe decided to depart the Phoenix Suns in 2005 after becoming a free agent. He then agreed to a $70 million deal with the Atlanta Hawks. In 2010, Johnson’s deal with the Hawks was extended for an additional six years.
