Joe Lycett, a comedian, has admitted he didn’t burn £10,000 as part of a demonstration against David Beckham’s work as an ambassador for the World Cup in Qatar.
After the former England footballer did not comply with his ultimatum to quit the job in favor of LGBT people, Lycett live-streamed himself ostensibly destroying the money on Sunday.
On Monday, Lycett declared that he had given the money to a good cause. He stated that it would have been “irresponsible” to trash the money.
Since same-sex relationships are illegal in Qatar, several LGBT supporters abstain from the Fifa Men’s World Cup.
Lycett clarified in a video update that was shared on Twitter: “The money that entered the shredder was legitimate, but the money that emerged was counterfeit.
Before I even hit send on the initial tweet last week, the $10,000 had already been given to LGBTQ+ groups.
He assured his supporters that he would never destroy actual money and be so careless.
He continued, addressing Beckham specifically: “It was an empty threat meant to get people talking; I never expected to hear from you.
It was similar to your agreement with Qatar, David, in many ways: total [stuff] from the beginning.
Lycett called Beckham a “gay icon” in the earlier video, but he cautioned that this position was now in jeopardy.
The Birmingham-born cartoonist concluded his most recent installment by physically destroying a copy of Beckham’s Attitude front cover, claiming that the magazine had permitted him. The attitude was the first homosexual publication to feature a Premier League player.
The contentious World Cup began on the same day as the publicity gimmick, which at first drew criticism.
Some defended Lycett, saying that he had been successful in generating more than £10,000 worth of worthwhile attention for the LGBT cause; others said he ought to have donated the money to charity, which it has since been revealed that he has done.
The performer posted a video of the alleged shredding on social media with the description “a platform for advancement,” referencing a line Beckham himself had used in a Middle Eastern tournament marketing campaign.
While wearing a rainbow-colored tulle dress, Lycett was shown in the video stuffing wads of what appeared to be cash into an industrial shredder, however, it was unclear if the banknotes were real.
He gave the former England captain till noon on November 20 to respond to reports that he had agreed to a £10 million deal with the Fifa World Cup hosts.
In the event, that Beckham terminated the sponsorship agreement before the tournament, the comedian threatened to contribute £10,000 of his own money to an LGBT charity.
Beckham hasn’t made any remarks on Lycett’s act in the media.
Due to concerns about LGBT rights in Qatar and the host country’s handling of migrant labor, the World Cup has been engulfed in controversy.
On Monday, it was confirmed that due to the risk of players receiving a booking, England, Wales, and other European nations will not wear the OneLove armband at the World Cup.
Harry Kane of England and Gareth Bale of Wales were among the captains who had intended to wear armbands during games to encourage diversity and inclusion.
Seven football associations issued a united statement stating that they could not place their players “in a position where they could face sporting consequences.”
The statement said, “We are extremely dissatisfied by the Fifa decision, which we believe is unprecedented.
