Joey Merlino was born on March 13, 1962, in Philadelphia, to Italian-American parents Salvatore “Chuckie” Merlino and Rita Giordano. Merlino was raised in South Philadelphia and Ventnor City, New Jersey. He is also the nephew of killed Philadelphia crime family mobster Lawrence “Yogi” Merlino, who turned government witness.
Joey’s sister, Maria, was previously engaged to Salvatore Testa. Stanfa was arrested in March 1994 for Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act violations, convicted in 1995, and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1996. With the bulk of Stanfa’s associates arrested and imprisoned, Merlino won the battle and appointed Ralph Natale as the new boss, while installing himself as his underboss following his release from prison in November 1994.
During Natale’s reign, Merlino was the actual authority in the family, allowing Natale to become boss and distract law enforcement attention away from himself. Despite this, Merlino grew to fame as a flamboyant celebrity gangster who frequently partied with a large entourage.
