John Brennan was the son of Owen and Dorothy (Dunn) Brennan and was born in North Bergen, New Jersey. In 1948, his father, a metal forger from Ireland’s County Roscommon, relocated to New Jersey.

He attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Elementary School before completing his education at Saint Joseph of the Palisades High School in West New York, New Jersey.

Brennan received his Fordham University B.A. in political philosophy. He voted for Communist Party of the USA candidate Gus Hall in the 1976 presidential election.

Following his departure from Fordham, Brennan enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin, from which he earned a Master of Arts in government with a focus on Middle East studies in 1980.

While traveling to Fordham University, he noticed an ad in the New York Times about the CIA’s recruitment efforts. Working for the CIA seemed like a good fit for him because of his “hunger for new experiences” and desire to serve the public.

In 1980, he applied to join the CIA. When John submitted his application, he admitted, under duress, that four years before, he had voted for the Communist Party rival. Surprisingly, he was nonetheless acknowledged, and he later remarked that the CIA’s commitment to free speech inspired him.
