John Demsey An Estee Lauder Executive Has Been Suspended Over His Instagram Post

John Demsey

Executive John Demsey of Estee Lauder was recently fired as a result of his Instagram comment. Lauder purchased Demsey in 1991. Since 2015, the former has served as the company’s executive group president.

An internal memo that WWD got mentions John’s unpaid absence. As stated in the memo:

With immediate effect, John Demsey has been placed on unpaid leave due to content posted on his Instagram account.

The values of The Estée Lauder Companies are not reflected in the material supplied. Our employees and management are held accountable for adhering to these principles as a company that really values inclusive activities and conduct and in accordance with our corporate standards.

What was the purpose of John Demsey’s awkward post?

In a controversial Instagram post, Demsey used the N-word. The executive president of the giant cosmetics company tweeted inappropriately, making a joke about COVID-19, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The central image, which has since been taken off, was a meme showing a mock-up book cover with Big Bird from Sesame Street wearing a photoshopped mask. John now has 73,000+ followers on Instagram.

Contrarily, Estée Lauder chose not to make a statement outlining the specific reasons the executive was suspended. The board of directors for the giant in the cosmetics industry reportedly convened on Tuesday to discuss Demsey’s appointment.

John is a separated father of a teenage kid. He is well-known to influential people and partygoers in New York City. Demsey graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and a master’s degree from the Stern School of Business at New York University.

In the 1990s, he began his career in the cosmetics industry. He was named the leader of MAC Cosmetics, a division of Estee Lauder, in 1998. Then, in 2006, he was appointed head of Estee Lauder International.

John has built a strong portfolio by working with brands including Clinique, Aramis and Designer Fragrances, Prescriptives, MAC Cosmetics, Bobbi Brown, Jo Malone London, Bumble & Bumble, Tom Ford Beauty, Smashbox, Rodin olio Lusso, Le Labo, Editions de Perfumes Frédéric Malle, and Glamglow.

He served as the creative director for Tom Ford Beauty, MAC, Clinique, Too Faced, Smashbox, and Glamglow. His employment will be more centered on makeup starting in 2020.
