On August 15, 1953, in Houston, Texas, John Mackey was born to Margaret Wescott (Powell) and William Sturges “Bill” Mackey, Jr. He has two siblings: a sister and a boy.

Before passing away in 2004, John’s father, Bill Mackey, was a bookkeeping professor, CEO of LifeMark, a human services company, and a Whole Foods Market investor. According to the book Conscious Capitalism, Mackey expresses gratitude to his father for giving him valuable life skills.

John’s mother, Margaret Mackey, died in 198 when he was 34 years old. John and Margaret’s relationship was tense, which was aggravated by her wish for a different future for her kid.
