For BBC Sports, he covered ten FIFA World Cups, 29 FA Cup Finals, and ten European Championships. The legendary commentator had provided commentary for over 2500 televised games. He began working for the BBC as a sports presenter for Radio 2 in 1968, and his first match commentary was Everton vs. Derby County in December 1969.
In September 2017, Motson announced his retirement from the BBC. On May 13, 2018, he provided commentary for Arsenal vs. Crystal Palace. Motson was invited to the pitch after the game and was applauded by fans.
Roy Hodgson presented him with a crystal microphone and a copy of his first and last matches at Selhurst Park club stadium. In the 2001 Birthday Honours, Motty was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contributions to sports broadcasting and football.

On February 23, 2023, John Motson OBE died peacefully in his sleep. His cause of death was not disclosed. Motson’s family issued a statement announcing his death. The statement said, “It is with great sadness that we announce that John Motson OBE died peacefully in his sleep today.”
There were no reports of the legendary commentator becoming ill before his death. However, he was diagnosed with cancer in 2014. He even missed the World Cup in Brazil that year, according to Fox Sports. Although there is no mention of Motson, 77, dying of cancer, the tumor most likely killed him. John Motson’s Family History And Married Life
John Walker Motson was born on July 10, 1945, in Salford, Lancashire. Motson grew up in a religious family because his father was a Methodist minister. He attended Culford School, where football was generally frowned upon, with rugby and cricket being the most important sports.
Motty started working for the Barnet newspaper in 1963 and later moved on to the Sheffield Morning Telegraph in 1967. John Motson was married to Anne Motson.
